Bowling / sports business

Michael Gaughan

The hotel operator whose sports investments helped turn participant travel into recurring Vegas business.

THE VEGAS CONNECTION

A Las Vegas resort and venue developer behind permanent tournament-bowling infrastructure at South Point.

Michael Gaughan’s sports connection reaches beyond casino ownership. Pat Christenson’s first-person history describes an operator willing to invest in event facilities, including the Orleans Arena and the permanent bowling infrastructure sought by national tournament organizers.

USBC’s October 2014 announcement supplies the physical details of the South Point Bowling Plaza: a $35 million, 90,000-square-foot tournament facility with 60 lanes, a 360-seat viewing area and a 720-unit locker room. Its two banks of 30 lanes were designed specifically for competition. Those are opening-era specifications, distinct from a claim about today’s available seating.

The project followed a 2013 agreement involving South Point, USBC, Las Vegas Events and the tourism authority. For ArenaLV, Gaughan illustrates how sports economics also depends on facilities that bring participants and their companions for repeat visits. The governing body’s opening report and Christenson’s retrospective document that investment without treating promotional forecasts as measured economic results.
