Mills Lane belongs in the Las Vegas sports story because of his work inside its championship rings. His home and legal career were rooted in Reno; this is a major-event connection to Las Vegas, not a claim that he was a Las Vegas native. On June 28, 1997, he refereed the heavyweight rematch between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The official became an essential part of the story when he disqualified Tyson for biting Holyfield.
Lane had experienced boxing from the fighter’s side. After taking up the sport in the Marine Corps, he boxed for the University of Nevada in Reno. The university records his 1960 NCAA welterweight championship, the LaRowe Trophy as outstanding college boxer and a professional record of ten wins and one loss. His college was Nevada, not UNLV.
The 1997 rematch tested the referee’s judgment under extraordinary pressure. In his August 24, 1998 Fresh Air interview, Lane described consulting the commission and ringside doctor after the first bite. He deducted two points and allowed the contest to continue; after another bite, he disqualified Tyson. The interview lets readers hear his explanation directly rather than relying only on the familiar television images.
Referee magazine’s account follows the decisions and reactions surrounding that night. It also places Lane in his other working life as a Nevada trial judge. Together, the reporting and his own interview show why an official is more than a name in a fight result: the referee must interpret what happened, consult medical staff and decide whether the contest can continue.
The Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame included Lane in its inaugural 2013 class. His profile sits alongside Richard Steele and broadcaster Al Bernstein in ArenaLV’s boxing section, widening the story beyond fighters and promoters. The linked broadcast archive preserves the 1997 event; the Fresh Air source provides an audio interview and readable transcript.
