Chuck Hull’s career grew with Las Vegas itself. The Las Vegas Sun traced his move to the city to 1952 and his early work in local radio. He also became a pioneering television sportscaster at KLAS-TV. Boxing was one part of a working life that crossed broadcasting, casino employment and the presentation of live sport.
His microphone was heard at modest casino shows as well as major championship promotions. The Sun’s obituary recalled the range from the old Silver Slipper to Caesars Palace. That is a useful corrective to histories made entirely of superfights: Las Vegas boxing also depended on smaller cards, local media and experienced people who could make an evening run.
The Associated Press obituary, preserved on ESPN, identifies Hull’s assignments at the first Sugar Ray Leonard–Thomas Hearns fight, Larry Holmes–Muhammad Ali and Holmes–Gerry Cooney. It reports his own estimate of at least 130 world-title fights. That figure is an attributed career estimate, not a newly reconstructed ArenaLV bout count. His work also extended outside Nevada: he announced boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Hull’s style was associated with clear, restrained introductions. His importance to the city lies in the continuity of that voice across different venues and generations of fighters. The familiar ceremony before the first bell was part of how local spectators and television viewers experienced a Vegas championship night.
Hull died in Las Vegas in February 2000. Contemporary sources differ slightly on when he retired: the Sun’s 1996 profile says 1994, while the AP obituary says 1995. Both place the end of his ring-announcing career in the mid-1990s. The source links retain that distinction rather than turning an uncertain year into a precise anniversary.
