Jimmy Lennon Jr.

A Hall of Fame ring announcer whose introductions became part of the Vegas fight-night ritual.

THE VEGAS CONNECTION

A recurring voice of Las Vegas championship boxing, including Tyson–Holyfield and Mayweather–Pacquiao at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Jimmy Lennon Jr. followed his father, Jimmy Lennon, into ring announcing. His career became closely associated with Showtime’s boxing coverage and later included Premier Boxing Champions assignments. His role is distinct from that of a television analyst: the ring announcer introduces the competitors and delivers official announcements to the arena and the broadcast audience.

Lennon told CBS he first used his signature Showtime call at a 1992 Julio César Chávez title fight at the Mirage.

His Vegas connection runs through repeated major-event assignments, rather than a claim that he was born in the city. His career includes Tyson–Holyfield, and he shared announcing duties with Michael Buffer at the May 2, 2015 Mayweather–Pacquiao fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Lennon introduced Mayweather; Buffer introduced Pacquiao. The split reflected the joint Showtime–HBO presentation of a fight built around two rival boxing and television camps.

The World Boxing Council’s April 29, 2020 interview feature explores the family apprenticeship behind that public voice. Lennon discusses his father’s influence, his link to Julio César Chávez’s first world-title fight and memories of Tyson–Douglas. Those recollections range beyond Nevada; they provide career context rather than suggesting every famous bout he announced took place in Las Vegas.

Lennon was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013. Read alongside Chuck Hull’s local broadcasting story and Al Bernstein’s work as an analyst, his career shows several different jobs behind the sound of a fight. ArenaLV links the interviews and bout history so readers can distinguish the announcer’s duties from commentary, promotion and refereeing.
